The Opportunity
Huawei Milan Research Center is seeking highly motivated Photonic Technology Expert as a consultant to join its Wireless R&D team to spearhead cutting-edge innovations in Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) systems, photonic integrated circuit (PIC) design, and optoelectronic device development, directly shaping the future of next-generation wireless communication. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in photonics with experience in designing, developing, and testing advanced photonics systems. This role involves working on innovative projects in the field of wireless communications systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the overall technical planning, research and development of microwave photonic technologies (including Radio-over-Fiber (RoF), photonic integrated circuit (PIC) design, and optoelectronic devices) in wireless communication systems, covering end-to-end solutions from theoretical modeling to engineering implementation.
- Design and validate the simulation and optimization of high-complexity photonic systems (e.g., optoelectronic hybrid link design, noise suppression, bandwidth enhancement) to ensure compliance with 5G/6G communication standards.
- Guide the team in pre-fabrication simulation verification and post-process adaptation of photonic integrated circuits (PICs), resolving critical challenges such as high-speed signal integrity and thermal stability.
- Apply in-depth knowledge of core photonics circuit components (including waveguides, modulators, lasers, amplifiers, filters, and detectors) to design and integrate prototypes, and conduct comprehensive performance testing to ensure optimal functionality and efficiency
- Support the development and execution of test plans for laboratory and field trials to validate system performance, identify improvements, and troubleshoot issues.
- Conduct research to explore new technologies, materials and methods to improve system efficiency, data throughput, and signal quality in Radio over Fiber and FSO systems.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate photonic components with microwave and RF systems.
- Work on projects related to Radio over Fiber, free-space optics, or optical beamforming for advanced communication systems.
- Interact with suppliers to select and qualify optical and microwave components for prototyping and production.
- Prepare technical documentation and participate in design reviews.
Required Qualifications
- Proven 10+ years of experience in optical communication and photonic integration preferably in the field of microwave photonics technology for RoF or FSO.
- Master’s degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of microwave engineering, optical communication, and photonics integration.
- Knowledge of main Photonic Technology Platforms
- Hands-on experience with optical components like waveguides, tunable lasers, amplifiers, filters, photodetectors, and modulators, as well as Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs).
- Familiarity with simulation tools like Zemax, COMSOL, VPI Photonics or equivalent.
- Knowledge of high-frequency circuits and RF design principles.
- Hands-on experience with laboratory testing instruments, including oscilloscopes, signal generators, power meters, wavemeters, spectrum analyzers, optical spectrum analyzers, and probes, for performing on-chip testing and analysis of Photonics Integrated Circuits (PICs).
Preferred Qualifications
- Proven experience with microwave photonics integration or free-space photonics systems
- Experience with PIC (Photonic Integrated Circuits) development.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
